CHAPTER 14

After having had something to eat and drink David resumed following Thryline to his next task. He couldn’t think what it could be.

David walked behind Thryline for quite a while wondering where she was taking him. As he walked, he looked out over to the other mounds. They were all very similar. A giant path of grass area, with a circle of trees and as far as he could tell a giant stone at the centre of the circle.

Thryline stopped moving and looked at David and then looked out over at a neighbouring mound. It was closer than any of the others he had seen.

“Okay, so what do I have to do?” David asked.

“Get over there.” Thryline said, nodding to one of the furthest mounds.

“What? You’re joking right? How on earth would I even attempt that?” David asked, looking from Thryline to the mound across from them.

“Not only that, but you have to do it six times. When you cross to that mound, there will be another one to cross over to and four more after that.” Thryline said, very matter-of-factly.

David shook his head in disbelief. “How?” He blurted out.

“Well, that’s the task, that’s for you to find out. All I can tell you is that it is more Magick, but you will use all the four parts of the trial in this one: Physical, Mental, Magickal and Spiritual.” Thryline said, looking at him, as if waiting on more questions.

David had expected her to disappear after that but she didn’t, she stayed with him. He could only look over at the next mound and shake his head. He couldn’t figure out how on earth he was going to do this.

“Okay, let's think about this.” David said as he started walking back and forth, looking over to the neighbouring mound, as if it was going to give him some inspiration.

“What are you thinking then?” Thryline asked, hovering close to him as he paced.

“Well, they wouldn’t give me anything I couldn’t do, so I know I can do it.”

“Good, what else?” Thryline replied.

“It’s way too far to build anything like a rope bridge or even getting a rope over there, even if I could make one. It must be about two hundred feet across.” David then looked up to the top of the trees.

“You can’t kill any of the trees here!” Thryline said quickly.

“Well, bang goes that idea.” David said, still walking back and forth.

“What’s your energy level?” Thryline asked.

David stopped walking and squinted his eyes at her “Why would you ask me that at a time…” He stopped talking and smiled. “It’s about seventy-five.”

Thryline smiled encouragingly. “What’s your idea?”

“Oh shit, I don’t think I could. Do you mean floating across like I did in the desert, only I wasn’t able to move, I could only float.” David then walked to the edge of the mound they were on just now, and looked down again into the valley below. He knew for sure if he fell down there he would be dead.
